The Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) baseline assessment integrated into Formative Assessment 2 (FA-2 Tool-2) is engineered to map foundational reading and numeracy skills. Conducted individually in a supportive, relaxed environment, the assessment helps educators place each child on their actual competency path for targeted remedial instruction.

Core Instruction: Evaluate 1-on-1 and record only the highest verified level achieved.

📘 1. Telugu Testing Process & Levels

Testing Flow: Always initiate the test at Paragraph Level (Level 3). If fluent (3 or fewer errors), proceed up to Story. If the child struggles (> 3 errors), move down to Word Level.

Level 4	Story Level	Reads the story fluently (≤ 3 errors), but fails to answer both questions correctly.
Level 5	Comprehension	Reads the story fluently AND correctly answers BOTH comprehension questions.

🔢 2. Mathematics Testing Process & Operations

Testing Flow: Administer operations sequentially: Addition → Subtraction → Multiplication → Division → Word Problems. The learner must solve 2 out of 2 correctly at each stage to advance.

Level 5	Word Problem	Solves BOTH word problems correctly (solving only 1 out of 2 defaults to Level 4).

🔤 3. English Testing Process & Levels

Testing Flow: Follows the same level progression as Telugu reading. Always begin at Paragraph Level. Repeated mispronunciations on the same word are counted as only one single error.

Key Implementation Instructions for Teachers

• Fold Sheet Protocol: Show only the specific section being assessed by folding the paper. Never expose the full test sheet to the student at once.
• Writing Tasks: The writing section in Tool-2 is intended for classroom diagnosis; its marks are not entered on the OMR sheet.
• Level 5 Requirement: In language, answering 1 out of 2 comprehension questions locks the student at Level 4. In math, answering 1 out of 2 word problems locks the student at Level 4.

Q1: At what level should we begin testing Telugu and English reading?

Always start at Paragraph Level (Level 3). Proceed to Story if read fluently with 3 or fewer errors. Drop to Word Level if the student makes more than 3 errors.

Q2: Which level is awarded if a child solves only 1 out of 2 word problems in Maths?

The child must be marked at Division Level (Level 4). Level 5 strictly requires both word problems to be solved correctly.
